Frequently Asked Questions

What is Energy?

We are more than just flesh and blood.  Just as we have a physical anatomy that can be seen, we have an energy body that is not so readily seen. This energy body or energy field surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body in subtle but profound ways. You may also hear this energy referred to as “subtle energy.” It is an unseen life force that flows through us and gives us our “aliveness.”  Therefore, all bodies are believed to have "subtle" energy or life force.

This energy is animated by two sources: The natural biological processes and functions of the physical body and through the chakras (energy centers) and meridians (the network throughout the body by which energy moves). In its natural state, this energy is fluid and vibrant-- the way we feel when we are healthy.

“It's not the mechanistic part of the joints moving. It's not the chemistry of our body. It's understanding for the first time how energy influences how we feel."
~ Dr. Oz

How does energy become blocked and how does this cause illness?

Our organs and cells are nourished via the pathways (chakras and meridians) on which energy flows. If there is disruption or stagnation in the flow of energy (i.e., blocks), mental, physical or emotional distress or disease can result. These blocks weaken one or more bodily systems and illness can result. In addition to affecting physical health, the quality of our energy affects self-image, self-esteem, mind, emotions, mental functioning, and virtually every experience, including how we perceive the world and what we are capable of achieving in life.

How does Energy Medicine work?

The field of Energy Medicine is rapidly emerging as a scientific and medical discipline. Energy Medicine encompasses a variety of methods, including Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, Acupuncture and Acupressure, and many other modalities within Chinese and Eastern Medicine. It is based on the fundamental premise that all physical objects (bodies) and psychological processes (thoughts, emotions, beliefs and attitudes) are expressions of energy.  Consequently, health is determined by the overall flow and balance of a person's vital life force energy. Imbalances or blockages in the natural flow of the subtle energy fields in the body cause illness. Energy Medicine Practitioners claim they can either see the human energy field with their own eyes or they can sense it with their hands or bodies. Energy Medicine Therapies appear to work through the practitioner’s ability to emit or transmit vital, healthy energy to a recipient/patient as a way to restore health.

Is there scientific evidence for Energy Healing/ Energy Medicine?

Although scientists have not yet been able to measure energy fields using conventional scientific methods, techniques are being studied at major universities and government agencies. These studies examine many factors: cellular response, immune response, behavioral changes; changes in how a person is coping with illness; recovery time from injury and surgery and other emotional and psychological responses to energy therapies. There are many outstanding online resources and books where you can learn more:

Scientists studying energy medicine or using EM in their practice:

  • Gloria Gronowicz, Ph.D. Cellular Biologist
  • Dolores Krieger, Ph.D. MSN, Professor of Nursing, NYU
  • Dr. Mehemet Oz has used Reiki during open-heart and by-pass surgery

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese form of stress reduction that also promotes healing. Reiki is a safe and non-invasive complimentary medical therapy that entails light touch or no touch if preferred. A Reiki practitioner has been trained and empowered through attunements to access healing Reiki vibrations. The practitioner assesses imbalances of energy and applies Reiki to strengthen, correct or redirect the subtle energy flow as a means to promoting health. In Reiki, the flow of energy from the practitioner is working with the client’s own energy field to bring about subtle changes in their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Research is ongoing for many of these modalities. Scientific findings to date, suggest these approaches could be helpful in a wide variety of illnesses such as stress related physical symptoms, pain, high blood pressure and other heart conditions.

Can Reiki be used with other medical treatments?

Many hospitals across America have Reiki practitioners working with patients to heal faster with less pain.  Dr. Oz allowed Reiki in the operating room during heart surgery. None of 11 cases treated experienced post-operative depression, no post-operative pain, and transplant recipients experienced no organ rejection.  Reiki in conjunction with chemotherapy helps the patient relax which activates the body/mind natural healing ability.

Dr. Mehmet Oz at The Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City was one of the most prominent physicians to begin incorporating Reiki in patient care. Dr. Oz has stated, "Reiki has become a sought-after healing art among patients and mainstream medical professionals.”

Is Reiki for children?

Children of any age may benefit from the healing energy of Reiki.  Because it would be difficult for a child to be still for long periods, a child’s session need not be as long or the session can incorporate short breaks between Reiki applications. What the Practitioner senses in the energy of the client will indicate the best approach.

How might I feel during an Energy Healing session?

The client may feel cool, heat, and tingling, vibrating, peace, a letting go.  They also may sense colors, sound, or nothing at all. Each is perfectly normal.

How might I feel after a session?

Most people experience a deep calm and relaxation after a session. Clients report feeling less pain and more vibrancy at the conclusion is common.  An overall feeling of “Everything is going to be okay” may be with you for a few days. At times an emotion or memory may surface, as these are held in energetic blocks.  Effective energy work does release these blocks.

Is an Energy Healing session covered by insurance?

Because much of the focus of health insurance is on getting better, many modalities of alternative medicine that focus on preventative care are not covered.  However, Energy therapy is used all over the world and is currently offered in most hospitals, including many in Connecticut, because the calming effect it brings supports the body’s natural healing ability.
